A Weaving Journey - Featured Student Work

Our goal with Assembly craft classes and workshops is to provide a fun, approachable, and social learning experience for our students and to pique their interest in potential new creative hobbies (or more!). We realize that for some people, they just want to have the class experience and try something new. Maybe never doing the craft again... and that's fine! But for others, the class will send them off on a new path of discovery and passion!

Abby, a recent student in our Beginner's Loom Weaving Class shared with us her weaving journey:

"I'd been eyeing macrame classes for some time, but was intrigued by the weaving class because of the diversity of color, texture and technique options. After my class with Assembly I had enough basic skills to start exploring further on my own. It's been about a month since my class and I think I've woven every single day since! It's so relaxing and creative - I've been exploring with different types of fibers, practicing new techniques and playing around to find my own style. Thanks to Liz and Noelle for a great start to what I hope will be many weaves to come!"

Check out more of her amazing recent work below!

Macrame Wall Hanging Basics in Hillsboro

Macrame Wall Hanging Workshop // August 12, 2017

Assembly’s macrame wall hanging class at Perks of Art in Hillsboro taught students how to be properly knotty! A 70’s icon, macrame has recently made a trendy comeback.  So much so that our first class of the day sold out... so we added a second!  Attendees enjoyed their French press coffee or wine while making a modern piece to enhance their homes. The multiple knots learned gave folks the know-how to tackle future projects and many students purchased the macrame kit to create more at home!

Summertime Stitching at Beginner's Embroidery Class

Beginner's Embroidery Class // July 8, 2017

Embroidery is such a great portable year-round hobby to learn! You can just as well enjoy it with a nice glass of chilled rosé on a sunny patio as you can while sipping on a hot tea on a rainy day on the couch watching some Netflix.  And of course, stitching in the company of new friends at an Assembly workshop is fun too.  :)  Welcome to your new favorite hobby!

Our sold out embroidery class in Portland was full of tough decisions… flowers or night sky? Some students chose both and took kits home!

During class, Liz shared information about the basics of embroidery and all about topics such as hoops, needles, and fabric. The next step was practicing a variety of stitches and then, when ready, everyone jumped into the final designs and started work on their masterpieces.

Block Printing Workshop with Atlas Obscura!

On May 6th we were honored to partner with Atlas Obscura as part of their International Obscura Day. On this day, over 170 events took place around the world with unique experiences that celebrated the hidden wonders of the world. One of these events was our block printing workshop, which is one of the most ancient types of printmaking. Students designed and carved blocks, then explored printing on stationery, journals, and dish towels.

Weaving Workshop in Portland

April 8, 2017 // Beginner's Weaving Workshop

Our SOLD OUT (thanks everyone!) Beginner's Weaving Class on 4/8 in Portland taught students the basic stitches to create a modern woven wall hanging. During this evening workshop, students gained the confidence and skills to continue practicing this beautiful and relaxing art form. Most weavers took advantage of the option to purchase the loom kit to make more masterpieces at home! Our handy handout ensured that the ancient weaving techniques could be passed down for generations to come... err, or at least until students moved on to another craft :)

It was an evening filled with new and familiar faces and tons of fun!

Can we send you a letter? Write_On April Letter Writing Challenge

In celebration of April as National Letterwriting Month, we have challenged ourselves to get in the habit of writing and sending more handwritten correspondence to friends and family, including those in the Assembly crafty community!

To kick start this effort, we joined Write_On, a mission driven campaign "to promote joy, creativity, expression, and connection through hand-written correspondence."

We are using their stationery kit to write 30 letters/cards in 30 days during April.

We would love to send you one of our thirty handwritten cards this month!  And challenge you to consider sending some of your own.  Go here to submit your info and then keep eye on your mailbox. :)

Update: 5/1/17

We met our goal!  We happily mailed out our 30 cards this month to destinations as close as Portland and as far away as India!  Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen and we hope you enjoyed your friendly snail mail. Stay tuned for more monthly challenges to come.

DIY Lotions & Balms

March 18, 2017 // DIY Natural Lotions & Balms Class

We finished off Assembly's March madness in Portland with a crash course in DIY moisturizers with all natural ingredients including beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil. Guest instructor Lauren Morse answered questions with a comprehensive knowledge gained from years of experience developing custom body products.

Students enjoyed socializing over complimentary snacks and refreshments and left with their own balms, lotion bars, a luxurious hand lotion, and more importantly, the knowledge and skills to recreate these at home!

Glass Etching in Hillsboro!

March 11, 2017 // Glass Etching Workshop

Students gathered at Perks of Art in downtown Hillsboro to learn the art of glass etching with custom drinkware.

Students had a blast choosing their stencils and type of glassware (pint, cocktail, or wine glass... what would you choose?!) With spring finally here, the outdoorsy designs in particular featuring images of mountains, camping, and hiking proved to be hits! A few folks made personalized gifts for friends and family.

Have we mentioned how much we adore Perks of Art? If you haven't checked it out, it's worth the drive from Portland (or anywhere!) to check out the unique artwork and handmade items for sale that you can't find anywhere else. Trust us, you'll be impressed. Downtown Hillsboro is moving up in the world!

Clay Class Creativity!

Clay Ring Dish Class // February 18, 2017

Students at our Clay Ring Dish Class in Portland weren't afraid to get their hands a little dirty-- which is always so much fun! Through making two custom bowls, attendees explored techniques for working with air-dry clay, such as coloring, marbling, and adding texture. Each dish ended up as unique as their maker and after being finished off with a sealant, these catch-all dishes will be perfect to hold jewelry or other trinkets. We can't wait to host this pottery class again in the future!
